In the wake of the pandemic, it’s no secret that businesses across the board are struggling to find staff. However, I happen to believe with the correct guidance, we can help create the right systems and behaviors to stop that constant cycle of high turnover of staff.
Richard Brason once famously said “customers come second, employees come first”.
Here’s my top tips
- Invest in your people. Identify who are the leaders in your business and who wants to grow and develop in their roles. Offer trainings, workshops and set clear career pathways to help motivate those staff members.
- Crystal Clear communication. It might sound obvious, but it’s critical. Make sure staff understand your ‘why’ behind your business and what you hope to achieve - remember they are helping you build your business so they need to understand the passion behind it. Hold quick, but regular, business meetings to update staff on any changes, developments, failures and accomplishments.
- Pay staff their worth. So many employers I’ve spoken to complain about paying wages, whereas I see wages as my biggest asset. If your staff are well compensated for their job, they will feel valued and be more likely to perform.
- Create a happy, healthy workplace. If possible, allow staff to be as autonomous as possible. I think the last two years have proven just how flexible many workplaces are capable of being. As long as staff are getting their work completed, to a high standard, give them some freedom and you’ll be sure to win their loyalty in return.
- Motivate staff through setting achievable goals together. Whether it’s simply delegating some of the many tasks keeping you up at night, or if it’s setting sales goals for your growing business, regular goal setting sessions can help keep you and your business on track and help motivate staff.
